When the naive, twenty-something Eli Stanton accidentally ingests magic mushrooms and has a vision that gives him the week’s winning lotto numbers, he thinks his life is about to change for good. But his elderly Pekingese becomes ill, and a panicked Eli seeks out the ’shrooms in a desperate bid for another vision. His desire is granted: he sees an idyllic world in the year 2525, where Bark Hamill is at his side.
Obsessed with this glimpse of the future, Eli throws himself into researching ways to get there. He invests some of his winnings into an experimental form of suspended animation for the both of them, confident he and Bark Hamill will reach a time where the dog can be made well.
One hot day in 2019, Eli and Bark Hamill “go under.” Five hundred years later, Eli wakes up—and learns that Pekingese are long extinct and Bark Hamill has been stolen. A grief-stricken Eli takes up the search for Bark Hamill, and the universe becomes embroiled in a hunt for the dog that is worth a planet.
